The Spinacino Consort - 'Away Vain Warld'
The Spinacino Consort live at Canongate Kirk as part of the the Edinburgh Fringe Festival 20/08/2022, performing their program of Scottish 17th century music 'Away Vain Warld', inspired by the Poetry of Elizabeth Melville.
The Scottish Reformation: a time of conflict and transformation. During Mary Queen of Scots' reign, the Catholic-French court clashed with the newly independent Kirk. The court of James VI showed increasing English influence, and after he left Scotland to unite the crowns, traditional Scottish music increasingly became an influence on Scottish nobility. The Spinacino Consort explores this period through the prism of the poetry of Elizabeth Melville, the first Scottish woman to see her poetry in print, and who wrote contrafacta on psalms, English lute song and French Air de Cour.
